Ways to combat summer slide in reading

When students spend months away from the classroom, it can lead to losses in their learning gains — this is often referred to as “summer slide.” While some schools opt to offer year-round curriculum to combat this, it isn’t possible, or preferable, for all schools to do so. These suggestions offer ways to keep students learning and growing over the summer without piling on tons of work or making it feel like a chore. These include summer reading lists, writing prompts and journaling – simple things that keep students thinking and learning even when they are outside of a structured learning environment.
